SOLAR25 C-COLO Convening - The Future of Your Team in Uncertain Times: Building Your Team, Professional Competencies, and Succession Planning
-Sponsored by Anthology

July 22, 2025, 9:00-11:00 AM

Hilton Portland Downtown

921 SW Sixth Avenue
Portland, OR  97204

Event Description:

As noted in the 2024 COLO Competency Research (Frederickson, Simunich, & Uranis, 2024) and the Chief Online Learning Officers’ Guidebook (Widmer & Cavanagh, eds., 2025), Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) must possess the skills to navigate complex situations and environments. Most leaders are not born with these skills naturally, but must curate them over the years through experiences and intentional interactions. Join the Council for Chief Online Learning Officers for this convening where we will discuss the following:

Topics:

  • Thriving in ambiguity
  • Identifying talent/ready for advancement in your team
  • Job descriptions and competencies/credentials
  • The importance of career ladders/positions
  • Re-classifications and working with HR
  • Identifying your own need for professional development

The 2025 Convening is the annual gathering of the Council for Chief Online Learning Officers (C-COLO). Attendance is free and limited to COLOs and Institutional Representatives registered for the 2025 Summit for Online Leadership and Administration. Each UPCEA member institution has the opportunity to identify a COLO to represent them in the Council. Registration for the Roundtable will close Monday, July 14.

Registration for 2025 SOLAR is required to register for the C-COLO Convening.

*What is a Chief Online Learning Officer (COLO)
A Chief Online Learning Officer (COLO) is the decision-maker for an online enterprise (whether at the unit, college, or institutional level). COLOs are accountable to the online enterprise and make the decisions to advance the strategy, leadership, and vision of post-secondary online education. At the operational level, a COLO makes the critical path decisions for an online enterprise (e.g. technology, outsourcing strategic enrollment management vs. building internal teams, etc.). UPCEA recognizes there is diversity in such roles and decisions. COLOs are sometimes professional or continuing education deans with online in their portfolio, while others are solely focused on online learning.

Please note that all Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) attending the COLO Convening will receive a complimentary copy of The Chief Online Learning Officers' Guidebook: A Framework for Strategy and Practice in Higher Education (Widmer & Cavanagh, 2025). COLOs will be able to pick up the book during the Convening in Portland. This essential resource offers practical insights and strategies for leaders navigating the evolving landscape of online learning.
